One of the most significant decisions you have to make when you are installing a porch, patio, or adjacent space near your deck is deciding what material to create the surface out of. There are many different materials that can be used for these outdoor living areas. As you select the right surface for your space, you need to think about both the present and the future. You want to select a material that will stand up over time, and one that can allow you to age in place, if you so desire. Here are a few of the common surfaces that you can use for your patio and some information about each surface material.

Concrete

Concrete is one of the most common materials used for a patio because it is flat, even, inexpensive and durable. Unfortunately, many people think that concrete is plain and boring; but it does not have to be. Concrete can be stamped, stained, colored, tinted or have inlays to help give it depth, character and style. This surface can even be brushed to help create traction when it is wet. One of the downsides to concrete is that it will crack. As long as it is cared for, and you have cracks filled, concrete can last you a long time.

Natural Stone

Another option that you can use for your patio is natural stone. Natural stone provides you with a natural look for your patio. It creates a higher end look, especially when compared with concrete. Natural stone can also be installed to match natural stone home exteriors. There are different types of natural stone that you can select from, allowing you to pick from a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Each stone has its own unique benefits. For example, flagstone has a slightly rough surface that is good for traction when wet. The biggest downside associated with natural stone is that it is pricey and costs more to install than other patio options.

Pavers

The final common material used for patios is pavers. Pavers are available in many shapes, sizes and colors, helping you to customize your patio. Paver kits are available to create uniquely shaped patios as well. Another benefit to them is that not only can they be used for your patio, but they can also be used for adjacent walkways and driveways, helping all of your home’s surfaces to match and look cohesive. Unlike concrete, pavers are much more resistant to cracking. Pavers take longer to install than concrete, but they are less expensive than natural stone, making them a good alternative between the two materials.
