An Introductory Guide to Home Additions
Let’s say you absolutely love your home. You love its location and the neighborhood; you even like how it looks. There is just one small problem: space.
The number one reason home owners consider adding on to their current home is lack of space.
Problem is, no two homes are alike, and getting the extra room you need is often more difficult than expected. So what should you do to make sure that perfect addition doesn’t become your biggest nightmare?
Make Sure you’re Allowed to Build
City ordinances usually dictate whether or not a homeowner can add to their home, based on local zoning. If zoning prohibits you from building into a side yard, than backup plans will need to be made.
If all else fails, a variance from the building department is possible, but also takes a lot of time and money. In this case, an addition might not be the answer you are looking for.
Do You Need an Addition, or a Renovation
The desire to build an addition can usually be a knee-jerk reaction to a need for extra space. However, in many instances a simple remodel of an existing space can be the answer. A basement remodel or kitchen rennovation can offer homeowners tons of extra space, while never requiring an expansion of the existing floorplan.
Check the Foundation
The foundation is the most important part of a home. Find one problem with the foundation and the whole home can be compromised. This is why checking the existing foundation is imperative when considering an addition.
Treat Any Addition like a Remodel
For an addition to feel like it’s part of the home, the original structure will need some shoring up. Adding to a home without the proper remodeling can make the new structure stand out wildly from the old. By including small aesthetic alterations into plans for an addition, the final product can be indistinguishable from the original.
