8 Important Questions to Ask Your Remodeler before Accepting a Quote
1. How long have you been in the remodeling business?
When selecting a contractor, it’s important to look for someone who knows the area and has a network to complete your job.
At Quality Craftsmen, we have been remodeling in the area for 25+ years. We are invested in our community and will work tirelessly to find the best people for your project.
2. How many crew members do you plan on employing for this project?
You need to know who will be there at your house every day.
Ask your contractor direct questions about who will be responsible, and how many people will be coming in and out on a daily basis.
3. What steps will they take to keep my house clean during construction?
Worst case scenario, remodeling can be one of the more stressful things you can go through. Nobody pictures their brand new renovation with dust covering every nook and cranny.
At Quality Craftsmen, we use a state-of-the-art dust collection system to prevent a large portion of the indoor mess.
The BuildClean Dust Control System eliminates 90% of airborne dust to provide a healthy, clean environment.
4. How will the crews keep your house and family safe and secure?
Literally, nothing tops this question.
On the surface, it’s better to discuss how they will protect your house and property from damage before demolition. Common sense, but make sure everyone is on the same page ahead of time.
Secondly, ask if they do background checks on their workers and what kind of insurance they have. When you let someone into your home, you need to have a certain level of trust. It’s better to ask up front than ask too late.
5. What is your guarantee? I want to know about product warranty and your personal guarantee?
Not all contractors provide a personal guarantee on their workmanship.
Quality Craftsmen will provide a (5) Five Year Workmanship Warranty on all labor used in the renovation of the property.
This warranty extends five years from the date of completion of the contract. This warranty covers the workmanship & labor used in construction and the structure associated directly with the renovation.
6. How will you keep me informed of the progress on my project?
Communication is paramount during a remodel. Nothing is worse than a project getting extended three weeks to wait on a selection to be made.
Make sure to ask your contractor about the communication process for your project.
7. Do you keep a foreman on site at all times? Will I be able to speak with the general contractor and project foreman during construction?
Find out who will be in charge of your project.
Knowing how to reach your contractor on an emergency basis is just as important as your contractor being able to reach you.
Exchange all your numbers — work, cell and landline — so that contacting each other won’t be a crisis in itself.
8. How many remodeling projects have you completed in the past 18 months? And what type of projects were these?
You want someone with experience, and you want to know what they are capable of. It may not make sense to get someone to build your deck, who hasn’t built a deck in several years.
Finding the right contractor is important. It will set the tone for your entire project (good or bad) right from the start.
Make sure you ask all the important and minor questions up front, so you know you will be one step closer to your dream home and you won’t find yourself in a nightmare.
