Playing off Light against Dark

With last week’s blog talking about the strength of white, let’s play off against that light base and add impact with dark accents. This can take the form of cocoa or black flooring, dark trim accents, deep toned interior wall paint, black trim on lighting fixtures, or even dark grout against white tile. Dark and light are timeless when it comes to home decor pairings and give you the advantage of being able to add swatches of color in unexpected places for high impact. If your accents are bold, make sure that there is some tie-in to surrounding decor, such as bed linens, cushion or carpet color for added impact; too many variations of color can take away from the intended effect. If you’re going for deep pigmented paint, try the long-lived, proven effect of one wall; a daring trend for the not-so-shy is the “fifth wall” – the ceiling!
